The task was to create a semiotic poster by interpreting randomly assigned words. A visual had to communicate our message like a semiotic symbol, and no type was permitted.

Fragile Strength

TASK

Fragile Strength is my perspective on the feminine divine. A flower, especially a rose, is beautiful, but it has thorns used as self-defense when someone tries to pluck it. Women are seen as fragile, but when put under pressure, they always shine through and conquer with their strength. The poster depicts this by showing a female form with rose petal-like shapes.

DELIVERABLES

PROCESS

Often confused with the symbol itself, semiotics is the study of how certain symbols acquire their meaning, how they have come to represent information, and how the relationship between the meaning and the image affects the reception of this information.

I took out 2 meanings with the words I was given: Flower and Testing. The first one was Gradual Decay, and the second was Fragile Strength. I was proud of these 2 posters, but they symbolised flowers literally, so it didn’t fulfill the concept of semiotics. I eventually made a more abstract concept that can be made into a symbol than just a literal depiction.
